Notes: Azul is a young and handsome guy that loves to play, and does well with other dogs. He does well on a leash, and is learning to walk with a Gentle Leader. Look how proudly he walks. Azul would do best in a home with older children as he needs consistent leadership and direction. He appears to be hard of hearing, but has begun basic training with K-9 Consultants to learn commands through hand signals and is making great progress. Chopper just came into rescue and still needs to be tested with other animals. He hasn't appeared to be very much interested in starting anything with the other dogs, mainly just curious. He was supposedly house broke at one time and we are in the process of re-affirming his house manners.

Notes: Zak is another formerly chained dog, having spent the last 3 years of his life living like that he was able to get into rescue, where it's now our mission to give him the home life he deserves.

Zak is his new name to start his new life. Zak has plenty of pent up energy, but just as much love for his new companions!

Since he has never lived in a home before he is enrolled in "House Manners 101" in his current foster home. This will include house and crate training him, teaching him how to walk "politely" on his leash, and how to "relax" when it's time to chill with a human. A human that isn't going to just put food in his bowl and walk away.

Zak gets neutered on the 19th of June and will be available for adoption after that if he is clear on all other medical issues.

Paris - Pit Bull Terrier Mix

Notes: Meet Paris - unlike her namesake she was saved, not just from Jail but from the Death Penalty.

Paris was an owner surrender due to a family move, but because she has the misfortune of having pitbull in her, she couldn't be adopted to the public but was scheduled to be euthanized right after being signed over. The stars must have been aligned just right for Paris as a rescuer was on the phone with the shelter and she just happened to have an extremely cute smile on her face, so she was 'mentioned' to the volunteer. Well, the volunteer couldn't let that happen and without ever meeting her or seeing her picture they were on their way to pick her up - and as they say "The rest is history", or at least will be as soon as she finds her safe, loving forever home!

Paris is house broke, appears to get along with other animals (but wants to chase cats), has been spayed and will be brought current on all shots before being adopted. Since she is living in a foster home with a lot of other dogs, both large and small, males and females, she will get tested to see how she does do with other dogs.

Paris does pretty good walking on a leash, she is crate and house trained.

Notes: Jack was rescued by a kind soul on the very day he was to be put to sleep. Jack was housed at the Baltimore Animal Shelter and his time was running out. A group of rescues who had seen his lovable mug banded together and saved him from the brink of demise. Good old Jack is now with his guardian angel in a temporary foster home; however, he can't stay there long and needs a home of his own. Jack is still a young lad, less than a year old and not even coming up to the knees of his foster mom. She reports that is a lovable bundle of energy.

Notes: Tudy's rescuer found her tied to a tree with a chain. Although there was a water bucket, it was a 5 gallon bucket that was taller than she was so she couldn't reach in it to get any water. Luckily her rescuer convinced the owners to surrender her and they did! Now Tudy is living the life...playing with other dogs, living in the house, getting plenty of food and water, and finally getting those ever important vaccinations and spay! Tudy is looking for a forever home that will love her and treat her as a member of the family!

Update: 11/4/07:
Check out the new picture of Tudy! She's still a small girl and we don't expect her to be more than 50 pounds. She's a very nimble and agile girl and her foster mom thinks she would be great in agility sports. Tudy's adoptive parents will definitely need a tall fence, as she is a jumper. She gets along with cats well enough, but loves to give playful chase to them if they run from her, so a house without cats may be best for her. Tudy is currently enrolled in obedience class to help get her ready for her forever home.

Notes: Red is a beautiful young Pit Bull Terrier mix that was just rescued from a shelter in West Virginia where he was left tied to the gate. Homeward Trails, a 501(c) non-profit animal rescue, rescued him and brought him back to our area so he can have a new chance at life. He is currently with a great foster, but we are looking for a loving family or person to offer Red a forever home. Red is sweet and affectionate towards people, though he is a lady ’s man and tends to attach himself more quickly to women. He is fine with children and is friendly and playful towards other dogs. He is a little high energy right now, because he is about 8 months old, so he might be too high energy if your home has an older dog that does not have patience for a playful pup. His foster takes him on long runs with her, and he is pretty good on a leash though still learning. Red would make a great only pet for most dog owners and would also be fine as a second dog for someone who is familiar with the breed.

Notes: Buddy is a very sweet male pit-bull. He's about 5 yrs old with an all white coat and black spots in his ears and on his belly. He was abandoned in his previous owner ’s fenced-in backyard when they moved. His foster's husband works in real estate and was interested in purchasing the house. When they first saw him at the house it was Friday (3/28) and the house had been vacated by the tenant for a week. They were assuming and hoping that the owner was going to come back for him. They noticed at that time that he had no food. They came back to the house on the following Monday morning. It had rained all weekend and he had been left outside without shelter, food, or water. They ’re unsure exactly how long he ’d been living in that condition but they believe about a week. They immediately decided to take in this poor dog and try to find him a good home! They gather he ’d been abused for an unknown amount of time but only to the extent of malnourishment and neglect. He shows absolutely NO signs that he was ever fought or physically abused such as aggression or scarring. He is very playful, affectionate, and starved for some real TLC! He completely relishes the doting attention they ’re giving him. Although at first he seemed to be unresponsive to typical commands, probably just due to his neglect, he is now responsive to “stop ”, “stay ”, “sit ”, "lay" and "give paw"! He loves to play catch and is very good at it. His fosters think very much of this sweetheart and we would take him in permanently ourselves but with a small family to support and a new baby coming this summer they unfortunately don't really have the means. He is a very good and loving dog who really deserves a good, loving home!

Update 5/2/08: He will be neutered and fully vetted next week.

Giselle is a marvelous girl. She is good with some dogs and not others. She has a very high play drive and needs an active home. Notes: Tyson is a handsome 2 year old Blue/Fawn American Staffordshire Terrier boy. Tyson is a very laid back cool cat and loves all people. Tyson was rescued from death when his owner decided that rather then providing proper medical care (as the local animal control facility stated) he would have him euthanized, likely we where able to intervene. Tyson is a real ham bone and would do wonderful in a single dog home or with one other dog that is big enough to handle his 'romping' play. She is working on her manners and is found to be very easily trained. She loves to curl up on your lap and have her belly rubbed where she eventually falls asleep. It is recommended that she has a home that is familiar with the Pitbull breed and will have time to work with her. She is so sweet to everyone she meets and very appreciative of all the love she gets. She loves going everywhere with her foster mom and would love to have her own forever home to transfer that love to! Paige is house trained, and doesn't chew on anything, and knows not to jump on counters or people. Paige doesn't need to be crated when no one is home she is so well house trained! She is also leash trained and is a joy to take for a walk (unless she sees a rabbit...). Paige has come a long way and responds to a number of commands, including 'off'. Paige does need to be the only dog in your life as she doesn't like to share her space or her people with other dogs, cats or other small animals. She doesn't try to push and bully them out of the way, instead she will make it plain very quickly, when they get too close that they aren't welcome. Paige is so smart and easy to train and such an absolutely loving companion that she will make a great addition to any family. Notes: Maggie's parents have fallen in love with her sweet disposition and high energy. Maggie loves to give tons of kisses and she snuggles up with us every night on the couch. She also has a lot of energy and loves long walks each day and playing fetch in the backyard. Notes: Meet Apollo, a neutered male brindle Pit Bull, probably about 3-4 years old. Apollo was in a rescue that shut down and has been shuffled around quite a bit. This poor guy is certainly in need of a good home where someone can spend some time with him. He is very affectionate and loves older children. He is high energy (translated that means BOUNCY) and is still working on his leash manners. He is crate-trained, does 'SIT', is learning 'OFF', and would love to get some more advanced training. He barks at my outdoor cats, so I am certain he would love to chase them. Apollo is picky with other dogs and may not be best placed with cats, so a home where he can be the only dog or with another dog that gets along with him well would be ideal.

Notes: Matilda is the mother of the puppies we also have listed. She is an American Pit Bull Terrier, about 3 years old and she weighs around 55 pounds. Matilda is housebroken and behaves well around children. She gets along well with other dogs her size and larger, but is probably not best with smaller dogs, cats or other small animals. Matilda is very good at escaping and would need a home with a privacy fence. She is happy, well-socialized, and loves to be around people. She is very affectionate, and likes to give kisses.....Can "sit" on command. History.......We have been fostering Matilda since we found her at a gas station in late May, 2008, and no owner could be located........She was pregnant when we found her, and her puppies were born June 29, 2008. Notes: The staff at Animal Control cannot say enough good things about this gorgeous 1 year old pit bull. She has a wonderful disposition around people and other dogs, is gentle while taking treats, and is very well behaved in her cage. She also has a unique white diamond-shaped patch at the back of her neck that is very striking. She was picked up as a stray and is now just hoping to find her forever home. This animal is currently at the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection and is in danger of euthanasia. The Roanoke Valley SPCA does not have space for it at this time, but has temperament tested it as being adoptable. Before adoption it will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm tested, and microchipped. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to being available for adoption. They are ready to go to their forever home and have lots of love to give!
